CFE Horneman

Christian Frederik Emil Horneman (born December 17, 1840 in Copenhagen ; † June 8, 1906 there ) was a Danish composer.

Life

The son of the composer Johan Ole Emil Horneman studied at the Leipzig Conservatory with Ignaz Moscheles , Ernst Friedrich Richter , Moritz Hauptmann and Julius Rietz . After his return to Denmark he composed divertimenti and opera fantasies, orchestral pieces for the Tivoli , a string quartet and in 1863 the opera Aladdin .

With Gottfred Matthison-Hansen and others, he founded the Euterpe Concert Institute in 1865 , and conducted its concerts. During a trip to Germany in 1867 he composed the Overture heroique in Munich and performed the Aladdin Overture at a Gewandhaus concert in Leipzig.

In 1874 he founded the Koncertforeningen with Otto Malling , whose concerts both conducted alternately, and in 1879 the Copenhagen Conservatory, which today bears his name. In addition, several drama pieces were written for the Dagmartheatret , including Holger Drachmann's Esther and Frederik Paludan-Müller's Kalanus , and the cantata In memoriam Christian IX.
