Karl Appold
Karl Appold (born January 25, 1840 in Nuremberg , † September 25, 1884 in Munich ) was a German painter , draftsman and engraver .
Live and act
Karl Appold was the son of Johann Leonhard Appold (1808-1858) and his wife Karolina geb. Stoek. He learned to engrave from his father, who worked as a copperplate engraver in Nuremberg.
The young artist gave up engraving because of an eye ailment that appeared early on in order to train as a painter from 1860 onwards. From 1864 Appold attended the Munich Academy of Fine Arts . Here he became a student of the painters Philipp von Foltz and Moritz von Schwind , the latter having the greatest influence on him.
Karl Appold created some beautiful paintings, but was forced to illustrate mainly books and newspapers due to complete lack of resources. At that time he gained importance as a draftsman and illustrator in Bavaria. With restless diligence, tirelessly striving for further education, the eye-suffering artist drew other people's pictures with conscientious fidelity and also designed his own compositions. The Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie stated in 1902: "It will probably never succeed in collecting all the little papers that this busy, elastic mind invented for calendars, journals, magazines and books and carried out with the greatest possible perfection."
All his life poor and visually impaired, a severe heart condition tied him to bed for months and he died of it on September 25, 1884, in Munich. His rich estate went unnoticed and was only sold later through auctions. There were also very good copies of works by his teacher Moritz von Schwind, some of which were deliberately sold, some in ignorance of the facts, as Schwind's originals.
