Johann Friedrich Abegg (born May 22, 1761 in Bockenau ; † August 8, 1840 in Bremen ) was a German businessman and senator in Bremen.

biography

Abegg was the son of the Reformed pastor Georg Ludwig Abegg (1716–1766). He was married to the daughter of a silk manufacturer, Catharina Henriette, geb. Sengstake. They had four children together.

After the early death of his father, he and his two brothers grew up with close relatives. In Braunschweig he received his school education from the preacher Kirchhof. In 1779 he moved to Bremen and completed an apprenticeship as a commercial assistant. In 1795 he became a tobacco manufacturer and traded in leaf tobacco . In 1796 he acquired Bremen citizenship . In 1798 he took over the office of deacon at St. Ansgarii Church in Bremen. In 1801 he was appointed senior man . In 1805 he was elected President of the Collegium Seniorum (later the Bremen Chamber of Commerce ). In 1809 he founded the company J. F. Abegg & Co.that did propre, bills of exchange and commission business . In the same year he bought the Gut Holdheim estate in Oberneuland and had a mansion and a park built here. From 1814 his company was called J. F. Abegg & W. A. ​​Fritze , in 1822 he left it.

During the French period in Bremen , he was municipal councilor in Bremen from 1811 to 1813 . In 1814 he took part in the city's citizens' convention . In 1814 he belonged to the citizen opposition around C. J. Bredenkamp, ​​Christian Focke, Hagendorff, Hieronymus Klugkist , Hermann Hinrich Meier, Schönhütte, Isaac Hermann Schumacher and August Wilmanns. In 1818 he was elected Senator in Bremen to succeed Senator Johann Vollmers (1753-1818). He left this office on his death in 1840. He was also a member of the museum (1812) and recreation association (1804) and the builder of the Church of Our Lady .
