A year later, in 1856, Edward Stanley Gibbons finally opened his own small stamp shop in his father's pharmacy, after having been interested in stamp collecting for a long time. In 1863 he finally came into possession of numerous rare triangular stamps from the Cape of Good Hope . He bought two bags of these stamps for only £ 5 from two sailors who had won them in Cape Town . Edward Stanley Gibbons was able to resell these stamps for a whopping £ 500. This gave the impetus to start dealing professionally with stamps.

Edward Stanley Gibbons expanded his small stamp business and from 1865 even published his own stamp catalog. The Stanley Gibbons catalog is still published today, making it the oldest stamp catalog still in circulation in the world.

After the death of his father in 1867 he took over his business. However, he sold it in 1872 and ran a major stamp business in Plymouth for the next two years. During this time he also published his own stamp albums. In 1874 the successful businessman finally moved to London, where he also opened a stamp business. There he started the monthly edition of the philatelic trade journal Gibbons Stamp Monthly .

He finally sold his company for £ 25,000 in 1890 and traveled extensively. Finally he died on February 17, 1913 in London.
