Great Natchez Tornado

The Great Natchez Tornado on May 7, 1840 destroyed large parts of the city of Natchez , Mississippi , as well as many flat boats on the Mississippi . The cyclone killed a total of 317 people in Mississippi and Louisiana . According to the Fujita scale, which did not exist at the time, it would have been classified as F5.

Only the tri-state tornado and, depending on the count, the East St. Louis tornado claimed more deaths in the United States . The damage is estimated at $ 5 million (equivalent to $ 107 million in 2008).
