Baron Károly Cardinal Hornig von Hornburg [ ˈkaːroj ˈhorniɡ ] (born August 10, 1840 in Buda , Austrian Empire ; † February 9, 1917 in Veszprém , Austria-Hungary ) was the Hungarian bishop of Veszprém .

Life

Károly Hornig studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Budapest and Vienna and received the sacrament of ordination in 1862 . He then became a lecturer at the Imperial University of Budapest, where he received his doctorate in theology in 1869.

As secretary to Cardinal János Simor, he took part in the First Vatican Council in 1869 and 1870 .

From 1870 to 1878 he was the rector of the seminary of Budapest and from 1878 to 1888 he was director of the archbishopric of Esztergom . 1882 received the appointment as papal secret chamberlain honorary and titular abbot of the monastery of Babocsa.

In 1888 Hornig received the episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Esztergom János Cardinal Simor and became Bishop of Veszprém; Co- consecrators were Janos Zalka , Bishop of Győr , and Kornel Hidasy , Bishop of Szombathely . Pope Pius X accepted him in 1912 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura in the college of cardinals . On December 30, 1916, Cardinal Károly Hornig crowned Charles IV as King of Hungary .

He died on February 9, 1917 in Veszprém and was buried in the local cathedral.
