Carl Johannes Thomae
Carl Johannes Thomae (born December 11, 1840 in Laucha an der Unstrut , † April 1, 1921 in Jena ) was a German mathematician .
Life
Carl Johannes was the son of the school principal Karl-August Thomae and Emilie Gutsmuths and grew up in Laucha an der Unstrut . He attended the Domgymnasium in Naumburg and began studying at the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 1861 . After completing one year of military service, he continued his studies at the University of Göttingen and the University of Berlin . In 1864 he received his doctorate in Göttingen on the subject of the general transformation of theta functions with any number of variables to become a doctor of philosophy. In 1866 he completed his habilitation there and in 1867 switched to the University of Halle-Wittenberg as a lecturer. In addition, he had participated in the Austrian campaign in 1866 and was deployed as a guard of a prison camp in Torgau during the Franco-German war. For his military service he received the commemorative cross in 1866, the war commemorative coin in 1870/71 and the centar medal.
In 1872 he became an associate professor at the University of Halle, became a full professor of mathematics at the University of Freiburg in 1874, and in 1879 he moved to the University of Jena as a full professor of mathematics . Here he became director of the mathematics seminar and was appointed privy councilor . In addition, he participated in the organizational tasks of the university. He was dean of the philosophical faculty several times and in the winter semester of 1888 and in the summer semester of 1901 rector of the Alma Mater . In 1883 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina , he was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and a member of the Royal Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig . For his scientific achievements he was appointed commander of the Saxon ducal house order of the white falcon and first class knight of the Saxony Ernestine house order . In 1914 Thomae retired and died in Jena in 1921 after a short illness.
Carl Johannes Thomaes research was a. a. with function theory and epsilontics . The Thomas function is named after him. He described himself as a Riemann student, although he never attended Riemann's lectures himself.
Thomae was married twice. In 1874, Thomae married Anna Uhde in Balgstädt near his home town of Laucha an der Unstrut. Their son Walter was born a year later on November 5, 1875, but Thoma's wife died 5 days after the birth of their son. In 1892 Thomae married Sophie Pröpper for the second time in Jena. Susanne Thomae was born a year later.
