Prince Akaki Tsereteli ( Georgian აკაკი წერეთელი ; born June 9, 1840 in Schwitori , Russian Empire , † January 26, 1915 in Satschere , Russian Empire) was a Georgian poet and politician and one of the leading figures of the Georgian national movement.

Life

He came from a wealthy aristocratic family. The mother came from the Imeretic royal family. According to tradition, he grew up in a farming family until he was six years old. He passed the Abitur at the Georgian grammar school in Kutaisi . In 1863 he finished studying oriental languages ​​at the University of Saint Petersburg .

Tsereteli was initially a freelance author, later an editor of the satirical magazine Jester and co-founder of the Society for the Dissemination of Literacy among Georgians . Together with Ilia Tschavtschawadze a member of the liberal and social reformist writers' association Tergdaleuni , he became one of the spokesmen in the struggle for self-determination and freedom in Georgia.

His poems ( Suliko , Der Tutor , Tornike Eristavi ), stories ( Bashi-Achuki ) and plays ( Gamzrdeli ) were devoted to historical topics and the lack of freedom of the Georgian farmers. They made him a popular poet prince during his lifetime. In the first Georgian film in 1912 , Tsereteli was the main actor. It was a documentary for his 72nd birthday and showed him on a trip through western Georgia.

He was married to the Russian Natalja Basilewskaja. After his death he was buried in what is now the Pantheon on Mtatsminda in Tbilisi .

The Akaki Tsereteli State University of Kutaisi bears his name. His portrait is depicted on the front of the Georgian 10 Lari banknote. In the house where he was born in Schwitori there is a museum about the life of the writer.

According to him, the station was Tsereteli ( Zeretlis Gamsiri ) of Tbilisi Metro named.
