Fanny Burney
Frances "Fanny" Burney (born June 13, 1752 in King's Lynn , Norfolk , † January 6, 1840 in London ) was an English writer .
Life
Frances Burney, also called Fanny, was a daughter of the English music historian and composer Charles Burney . Her fame began after it became known that she had written the novel Evelina , initially published anonymously in 1778 . In the next few years she wrote Cecilia (1782) and Camilla (1796) - these novels deal with all the growth of smart, young girl, and Fanny Burney founded a new literary genre variant, the " novel of manners " (English "novel of manners". ). Her debut novel Evelina was published in March 2019 with extensive annotations in a complete new translation into German.
Her works were admired by Jane Austen . In 1814 Fanny Burney published her last novel, The Wanderer .
She also became known for her diaries, begun in 1768 and published posthumously, which describe life at the English court in great detail (Fanny Burney was Queen Charlotte's lady-in-waiting from 1786 to 1791) and report extensively on the personalities of her time, for example Samuel Johnson . Her diaries were edited in 1880 by the American author Sarah Chauncey Woolsey . Of particular interest to historians are the records from 1788, which were reissued by Oxford University Press in 2014.
