Hilarión Daza
Hilarión Grosolé Daza (born January 14, 1840 in Sucre , † February 27, 1894 in Uyuni ) was President of Bolivia from 1876 to 1879 .
Live and act
Daza came to power on May 4, 1876 through a coup against President Tomás Frías Ametller . In order to rehabilitate the ailing state budget, he imposed high taxes on saltpeter exports in 1879. This created anger among Chilean exporters. Chile saw this as a breach of contract (border treaties of 1874) and occupied the saltpetre areas in the saltpetre war (1879-1884). Daza was deposed on December 28, 1879 and went into exile in France for several years .
In the peace treaty of 1884, Bolivia had to surrender its access to the Pacific via Antofagasta with the province of Atacama to Chile .
Daza was murdered in Uyuni train station on February 27, 1894.
