Wilhelm Langbein

Wilhelm Langbein (born October 12, 1801 in Schönbeck , † March 3, 1840 in Friedland (Mecklenburg) ; full name: Wilhelm Ernst Christoph Langbein ) was a German theologian and educator.

Life

Wilhelm Langbein was the eldest son and one of ten children of the evangelical pastor in Schönbeck near Friedland (Mecklenburg) , Andreas Christian Gottlieb Langbein (born January 19, 1774 in Güstrow ; † October 14, 1831), and his wife Johanna Sophia Dorothea, b . Weißenborn (June 1, 1780 - November 27, 1816), a pastor's daughter from Schönbeck. His grandfather and great-grandfather on his mother's side had been pastors in Schönbeck. Langbein had seven further siblings and two half-siblings from his father's second marriage.

Langbein was homeschooled by his father until he started university. He studied philology and theology in Berlin . After passing the candidate examination, he returned to Schönbeck.

At Christmas 1825 he took over the sub-rectorate at the scholarly school in Friedland, which was the most important secondary school in southeast Mecklenburg until the early 19th century. He taught math, history and languages. From 1826 to 1827 he was the gymnastics manager at the Friedland gym. His brother-in-law Friedrich Weinrich (1783–1862), one of the pioneers of the gymnastics movement in Mecklenburg, was one of the closest Mecklenburg friends of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn and in 1814 one of his best man at Jahn's spontaneous marriage. Although the gymnastics ban was enacted in Prussia in 1819 in order to prevent all progressive forces after the war of liberation and to preserve the power of the nobility. Despite the gymnastics ban in Prussia, gymnastics was not banned in Mecklenburg-Strelitz . In 1828 he was promoted to Vice Rector ; he was introduced to this office on April 16, 1828. In 1832 he was promoted to vice rector . 1833-1835 he was a swimming supervisor in the Friedländer gymnastics club.

He led a theological reading society for the Strelitz land.

Wilhelm Langbein was married to Sophie Johanna Gustave Caroline, b. Matthias (born August 14, 1811 in Altenhagen near Treptow ; † unknown), a pastor's daughter from Pomerania. They had five children together, among them the later superintendent Gustav Langbein .

Wilhelm Langbein died of typhus at the age of 38 .
