Johann Christoph Gottlob Weise (born November 30, 1762 in Weimar ; † May 10, 1840 there ) was a German botanist and author .

Life

Johann Christoph Gottlob Weise was born as the son of a court orchestra musician to Duke Karl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach in Weimar. Due to deafness, his father had to retire early and therefore lacked the financial means for the student education of his three children.

Johann Christoph Gottlob Weise attended today's Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium Weimar in Weimar until 1779 . With the help of friends who studied in Jena and whom he often visited there, he was able to continue his education on an autodidactic basis .

Until 1787 he carried out illumination work for the Landes-Industrie-Comptoir of Friedrich Justin Bertuch , which was the leading German cartographic publisher at the beginning of the 19th century. Then he was sent to Dresden by Duke Karl August to the artillery school, which he attended until 1793, when he joined the Weimar contingent. His unit was about to be deployed in the first coalition war, but he had meanwhile completely lost his inclination to become a soldier, so that he stayed in Weimar against the wishes of the duke, whereby he was no longer given any employment.

In 1805 the first bird shooting was held at the newly built shooting house . As a former artilleryman, he had taken over the burning of the festival cannon. A drunk had come too close to the open powder keg with his burning pipe and caused it to explode. Johann Christoph Gottlob Weise, who wanted to save the drunk, sustained severe burns.

After the battle of Jena , the French general Armand Charles Guilleminot was commissioned by Napoleon to survey the battlefield. Johann Christoph Gottlob Weise was recommended to him as a surveyor . He did such a good job that he again won the favor of the duke, who appointed him supervisor of the Weimar military library in 1807 .

In 1811 he was promoted from engineering geographer to horticultural inspector. Due to his botanical knowledge, he published numerous publications and in 1827 was able to purchase the house from Friedrich Schiller .
