Eduard Pechuel-Loesche (pseudonym also: ME Plankenau ; born July 26, 1840 in Zöschen near Merseburg , †  May 29, 1913 in Munich ) was a German geographer and Africa explorer .

Life

Pechuel-Loesche studied natural sciences in Leipzig , obtained his doctorate in medicine. phil. and completed his habilitation in 1886 at Jena for geography and ethnology . In 1895 he accepted an appointment as associate professor at the University of Erlangen .

Since the 1860s, Pechuel-Loesche made long journeys to the West Indies , North and South America , the coastal countries and the island world of the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific . He also went to the southern and northern Arctic Ocean and the Bering Strait . In the years between 1874 and 1876 he was a member of the German expedition on the Loango coast under the direction of Paul Güßfeldt . He took part in the founding of the Congo State and served there between 1882 and 1883 as Stanley's deputy . From 1884 to 1885 he took his wife on a trip to South West Africa , to Walvis Bay and to the land of the Herero . He was a corresponding member of the Thuringian-Saxon Association for Geography and also a member of the Central Association for Commercial Geography and Promotion of German Interests Abroad .

Eduard Pechuel-Loesche painted around 400 watercolors on his travels, which later came into the possession of the Geographical Seminar in Hamburg.

Honors

The plant genus Pechuel-Loeschea O. Hoffm is named after him . from the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
