Georg Scheiblein (born July 19, 1766 in Aschaffenburg , † March 9, 1840 in Schmerlenbach Monastery in Hösbach ) was a Roman Catholic German clergyman.

Life

Georg Scheiblein was born as the son of the sack master Wilhelm Scheiblein and his wife Agatha, nee. Ronn was born.

He attended elementary school and then the Latin school in Aschaffenburg. After finishing this school he went to the grammar school in Mainz and gave lessons from the 3rd grade onwards for a fee. This enabled him not only to save the parents school costs, but also to support them financially.

At the age of 19 he came to the Mainz seminary in 1785 and was trained as a priest there. On the occasion of the feast of St. Augustine, the teacher of the church, he gave a Latin academic speech that led to his being appointed a licentiate in theology.

After his training he was ordained a priest and held his first holy mass on the first Sunday in September 1789 ( other source: April 1, 1789 ) in the parish church in Aschaffenburg. Shortly afterwards he was employed in pastoral care. He found his first job as a chaplain in Mudau , from there in Dorfprozelten , then in Wiesthal and finally in Bingen , where he also became a teacher at the Latin school. At the time, Bingen was right on the French border and Georg Scheiblein was threatened by the Illuminati and clubists who fought against the Catholic Church.

On December 7th, 1798 he was promoted to the parish of St. Lorenz in Erfurt as a parish priest, prefect of the catholic town and country schools, director of the catholic high school and assesor at the clerical court .

In the Treaty of Lunéville on February 9, 1801, it was decided that all archbishoprics, dioceses, monasteries and monasteries existing in Germany were to be abolished and the secular princes were to be compensated for the damage suffered in the previous years in the war against France with the proceeds and income . The Archdiocese of Mainz first fell under secularization and was divided into individual components . Erfurt, which was originally a Kurmainzische city, fell to the crown of Prussia . The Prussian government planned to unite the Catholic grammar school with the Lutheran grammar school. Georg Scheiblein, however, feared that this could lead to a disadvantage for Catholicism and openly and firmly opposed these plans. The President of the Royal Prussian Province of Erfurt-Eichsfeld, Christian Konrad Wilhelm von Dohm, tried to change his mind. by offering him a promotion. Georg Scheiblein refused this, " ... will not act against my conscience at any price in the world and sacrifice my convictions ". Christian Konrad Wilhelm von Dohm replied to this: " ... now Scheiblein, the incorruptible and incorruptible, is unforgettable to me! " As long as Pastor Scheiblein was in Erfurt, this request was not repeated.

On October 6, 1806, the conquering French tried to steal the church treasure of his parish. Georg Scheiblein, who was ready to sacrifice his life, refused to hand over the key. Although this forced him from the respect of the French, but with his steadfastness he also attracted the disapproval of some citizens. When some citizens of the Principality of Erfurt told the French city commandant that there were disputes between the Catholic and Lutheran Churches, which were caused by the person of Georg Scheiblein, investigations were initiated by the city commandant. During the subsequent inquiries, the Protestant consistory in Erfurt officially declared, " ... that the complaint placed against Mr. Scheiblein was a harsh lie ". Thereupon suspicions were sent to the episcopal commissariat that Georg Scheiblein was in correspondence with the enemies of France. He was then called from Erfurt and invited to Aschaffenburg to take responsibility. The commission of inquiry called up for this came to the conclusion that Georg Scheiblein was innocent and that he could move back into his parish in Erfurt; but he voluntarily renounced this.

The Kurerzkanzler Karl Theodor von Dalberg had received the dissolved Schmerlenbach Monastery as part of the secularization. He donated this to the Aschaffenburg clerical seminary in 1807, which in 1812 set up its own parish with an attached correctional house for clergymen in Schmerlenbach. Office February 17, 1812 Georg Scheiblein became the first director of the correctional house.

In 1814 the Principality of Aschaffenburg fell to the Bavarian Crown and Crown Prince Ludwig used the Johannisburg Palace there as his summer residence. The Crown Prince visited the nearby Schmerlenbach Monastery and met Pastor Georg Scheiblein.

On October 4, 1826, he was appointed by the Bavarian King Ludwig I to the royal clergy , combined with the tax and stamp exemption, which he did not use for himself.

The king's children stayed with pastor Scheiblein more often, so that in 1834 he celebrated a festival in honor of the holy guardian angels of the royal princes and princesses. He was able to win over Bishop Adam Friedrich Groß zu Trockau to organize the celebration every year in the church. The bishop gave a handwritten assurance that he would found a Guardian Angel Brotherhood in the parish church of Schmerlenbach at his own expense, in which members of the parish "Guardian Angels", e.g. B. for the elderly and the sick. He obtained from Pope Gregory XVI. Indulgences for the main annual festival and for the quarterly holidays on which the church of Schmerlenbach was visited by the faithful. However, the implementation of the episcopal decree, which determined the income from the " bell bag " and the sacrificial stock to cover the costs, did not come about because no significant income was received. Pastor Scheiblein celebrated the festival annually at his own expense, but made an express note in the parish register that this regulation was not binding for his successors and that the festival was to be held voluntarily until the episcopal promised cost recovery.

On September 1, 1839, he celebrated his fiftieth jubilee as a priest, which coincided with the feast of the holy Guardian Angels. Eight days later, the jubilant priest received a letter of congratulation from King Ludwig I, in which he also awarded him the Cross of Honor of the Order of Louis .

Georg Scheiblein was also active as a writer, wrote numerous essays and short treatises, and was also the editor of the theological journal Der Katholik .
