Johan Svendsen
Johan Severin Svendsen (born September 30, 1840 in Christiania , later Oslo, † June 14, 1911 in Copenhagen ) was a Norwegian composer and conductor .
Life
Svendsen studied from 1863 to 1867 at the Leipzig Conservatory , where he had violin lessons with Ferdinand David and studied composition with Ernst Friedrich Richter and Carl Reinecke . He then went on trips and stayed in Paris , New York City and Bayreuth , where he also met Richard Wagner . From 1871 to 1872 he worked as Kapellmeister in Leipzig. From 1872 to 1883 he was the conductor of the Musikverein concerts in Kristiania with a three-year break. After that he was court music director in Copenhagen until his death, where he conducted the Copenhagen Royal Chapel .
Services
Svendsen composed two symphonies , Norwegian rhapsodies, an overture to Romeo and Juliet , a violin and a cello concerto, a string quartet, a string quintet and a string octet, choirs and songs . His violin romance in G major became famous.
