Friedrich Achelis

Friedrich "Fritz" Ludwig Tilman Achelis (born March 3, 1840 in Bremen , † May 20, 1917 in Bremen) was a German businessman and Bremen politician.

biography

Achelis came from a family of tanners, merchants and scholars who immigrated from Rostock in the 17th century . His father was the merchant and vice-consul Johann Achelis (1799–1869). After attending high school and, from 1856, a commercial apprenticeship, he worked in London from 1861 to 1864 in the export business, from 1864/65 in Le Havre for Lockhart in the import sector and from 1865 to 1867 in the USA . In 1866 he became a partner in the company of his father and his brother Johannes C. Achelis and returned to Bremen in 1867. In 1868 he married Clara Krummacher, daughter of a doctor.

Supervisory board of the NDL

In 1877 Achelis became a member of the supervisory board of Norddeutscher Lloyds (NDL) in Bremen, in 1892 he rose to vice-president and in 1911 after the resignation of Georg Plate (1844–1914), he succeeded him as chairman of the supervisory board of the NDL, an office he held until 1917. He founded a training foundation for needy children of members of the NDL.

Achelis was active in commercial and public life alongside his Lloyd activities. From 1882 he was elected to the Bremen citizenship as a representative of the business class . Here he was active in the deputation for the correction of the Lower Weser and in the civil office. He was also a commercial judge for six years, chairman of the supervisory boards of the Deutsche Nationalbank and the Sparkasse Bremen , chairman of the association for public pools, head of the Seafaring House , Russian vice-consul from 1891 to 1899, member of the board of the shipbuilding company in Berlin and member of the supervisory board of many companies . He was a co-founder of the Atlas Works and the North German Ironworks Bremen . In 1900 he was President of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce .
