Johann Ernst Sattler (born December 31, 1840 in Schonungen near Schweinfurt , † September 29, 1923 in Dresden ) was a German painter .

The architect Carl Sattler was his son.

Sattler studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy , where he was mostly a student of Prof. Johann Wilhelm Schirmer . On his advice, Sattler later moved to Munich , where he became a master student of the history painter Karl Theodor von Piloty .

In Munich Sattler also made the acquaintance of Wilhelm Leibl , whom he held in high esteem and whose circle of artists he soon joined. During his time in Munich, Sattler made short study trips to Berlin and Paris , to which his colleagues Wilhelm Trübner , Hans Thoma and others encouraged him.

Later, Sattler was for some time in Florence down to the old masters to study. From 1879 to 1884 Sattler lived and worked in Frankfurt am Main . Together with Hans Thoma, Sattler created the entire picturesque interior of the villa of the architect Simon Ravenstein .

He then went to Dresden-Loschwitz until 1895, where he again founded a studio. There he soon made friends with Adolf von Hildebrand , who later also became the teacher of his son Carl. In Schonungen, Sattler was responsible for the renovation and the picturesque redesign of Mainberg Castle .

Johann Ernst Sattler died on September 29, 1923 in Dresden-Hellerau at the age of almost 83.
