Heinrich Anton von Angeli (born July 8, 1840 in Ödenburg , † October 21, 1925 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter who became famous primarily for his portraits .

Life

After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna , he moved to Düsseldorf in 1856 , where he studied at the Art Academy with Christian Köhler and Heinrich Mücke , received private lessons with Emanuel Leutze from 1857 to 1859 and joined the artists' association Malkasten . A brief study with Karl von Piloty at the Academy in Munich in 1858 was followed by the opening of his own studio .

After his return to Vienna in 1862 he had great success as a history painter , but above all as a portrait painter . With increasing fame he became one of the most important portraitists of the nobility and at the courts of Europe. His patroness and pupil Empress Victoria (Kaiserin Friedrich), whom he portrayed several times along with her mother Queen Victoria, played a key role in his rise . In 1880 he also painted the future Empress Auguste Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg .

In 1894 Angeligasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him.

He rests in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 32 C, number 6).
