Théodore Ritter ( Toussaint Prévost , born April 5, 1840 in Nantes , † April 6, 1886 in Paris ) was a French pianist and composer.

Toussaint Prévost, according to a registry office entry, the son of the composer Eugène Prévost and the singer Augustine Dejean-Leroy, known under the name Eléonore Colon , grew up with the Marseille music amateur Toussaint Bennet , who was allegedly his biological father. As a child in Paris he was a student of Hector Berlioz , who was friends with Bennet.

He began his musical career as a baritone at the Brussels Opera La Monnaie under the name Félix . After he had completed his pianistic training with Franz Liszt , he began an international career as a piano virtuoso under the name Théodore Ritter. In 1860 he became a member of the Société des derniers concerts de Beethoven founded by Bennet . 1869–70 he undertook a concert tour of Canada and the USA with the violinist Frantz Jehin-Prume and the singer Carlotta Patti .

In addition to piano pieces, Ritter wrote the piano versions of Berlioz ' L'Enfance du Crist and Roméo et Juliette and other piano transcriptions. His students included u. a. the composer and pianist Isidore Philipp and the pianist Samuel Simons Sanford . Ritter was married to the singer Alice Desgranges . His niece Gabrielle Ritter-Ciampi was also known as a singer.

Théodore Ritter, who had been a member of the légion d'honneur since 1880 , was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
