Adolphe Deslandres

Adolphe-Edouard-Marie Deslandres (born January 22, 1840 in Batignolles-Monceau (now Paris ), † July 30, 1911 in Paris) was a French composer and organist.

Life

Laurent Deslandres , the son of long-time conductor of the church of Sainte-Marie des Batignolles, studied counterpoint and fugue with Simon Leborne and organ with François Benoist at the Paris Conservatory . In 1860 he won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with the cantata Ivan IV .

In 1862 he became organist at the Sainte-Marie church , where his father was conductor. He played here an organ of the company Stoltz-Frères and a choir organ of the firm Merklin . In addition to important church music works such as the Messe de Saint-André , which was performed at Notre Dame de Paris , and a Messe Solennelle , Deslandres composed several successful comic operas. In 1872 the opera Dimanche et Lundi was premiered at the Opéra-Comique and received great recognition from Gounod . The world premiere of Le Baiser followed in 1884, and further operas were performed at the Alcazar .

Deslandres also composed several organ works, an Air de ballet and Etudes de concert en staccato for the piano , a Scherzo for large orchestra and four meditations for violin, cello, horn, harp, organ and double bass.

Deslandres had two brothers whose musical careers were interrupted by their untimely death.

  • Jules-Laurent Deslandres (born August 15, 1838 in Batignolles, † August 1, 1870) studied at the Paris Conservatory and received a first prize in the double bass there in 1855. He was a member of the orchestra at the Paris Opera from 1859 .
  • Georges-Philippe Deslandres (* May 5, 1849, † October 12, 1875) was an organ student of César Franck and received a second prize in the subject organ in 1870. He worked as an organist at the churches of Sainte-Clotilde , Saint-Vincent-de-Paul and Sainte-Marie .
  • Finally, his sister Clémence Deslandres was a singer who appeared several times in her brother's works.
