The Landau Zoo in the Palatinate is the zoo of the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Landau in the Palatinate .
location
The zoo is only a five-minute walk from downtown Landau . That is why it is also known as an oasis in the city. It borders the historic fortifications of the Landau Fortress . In the city he can be recognized on street signs by a pictogram depicting three orange dromedaries .
history
On July 24, 1904, today's zoo site was taken over by the “Vogelfreund” association, which built the first bird houses . The city has owned the zoo since 1920. Up until the Second World War , the "Tiergarten Landau" was continuously expanded. After the destruction in that war, it was rebuilt. During the southwest German garden exhibition in 1949, other buildings were built, such as today's free flight hall, which at that time still served as a plant showroom. From 1954 to 1961 Karl Gräf, a trained animal keeper , was director. He was followed by the zoo keeper Roland Schneider, at whose time the monkey and warm house was built. In 1973 the veterinarian Rudolf Spengler became the new zoo director. He transformed the zoo into a zoo. In 1990 the zoo grounds were expanded by two hectares . In 1994 a veterinarian, Bernhard Neurohr , also became zoo director. Under his direction the socialization of different species was carried out, which still exists today. The veterinarian Jens-Ove Heckel has been the zoo director since 2000 . Since then, the zoo has been extensively modernized and no longer only serves the purpose of recreation, but also counts species protection , environmental education and research among its important tasks in the sense of the world zoo and aquarium conservation strategy.
Animals and enclosures
- Monkey House : In the monkey and warm house, in addition to monkeys , such as, the brown spider monkey head or in Germany only here and in the zoo of Duisburg and Osnabruck held Weißscheitelmangaben , including invertebrates, fish , amphibians, reptiles and birds shown. A specialty are the only individuals of the endangered Madagascar rail turtles in a European zoo.
- Parrot house and free-flight hall : Yellow-throated franklins , fishing turacos and Ecuadorian amazons live in the parrot house . In the adjacent open air hall is a rehabilitation aviary for African gray parrots and an open aviary with various water birds such as the spotted thick-knee or the hammer head . Other birds are found in the walk- Löffler aviary and in 2016 opened breeding aviaries for threatened bird species (such as Socorro Dove , red-vented cockatoo , Palawan Peacock-Pheasant and fire pigeon ).

Environmental education and zoo school
The Landau Zoo School is a cooperation between the University of Koblenz-Landau , the Landau campus and the Landau Zoo in the Palatinate. It was founded in 1992. The building of the zoo school is in the grounds of the Landau zoo. The zoo school offers lessons for kindergarten children and school classes of all types of schools all year round. Another focus is on the organization of workshops, children's birthdays and special events (zoo safari, picture book cinema, evening tour, etc.). There are also special offers for sick and disabled people as well as for adults / seniors. Events for the further training of teachers are also held regularly in the zoo school. The Landau Zoo School sees itself today as an institution for education for sustainable development. An attempt is made to bring together “green environmental education” and development education with a diverse teaching program. Based on the principle of Agenda 21 "Think globally - act locally", the zoo school today also focuses on topics that introduce children to global contexts and networked structures.
