Southwest German garden show

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Südwestdeutsche Gartenschau or Südwestdeutsche Gartenbauausstellung (mostly abbreviated as SÜWEGA ) in Landau in the Palatinate from July 15 to October 18, 1949 was the first horticultural show with a national impact in post-war Germany . Together with the German Garden Show in Stuttgart the following year , it was a forerunner of the Federal Garden Show that was held every two years from 1951 . The initiator was the Landau gardener Erich Mehlis.

On the occasion of the Southwest German Horticultural Exhibition, many new plants and beautification measures were carried out in the urban green, e.g. B. in Schillerpark.

More than 400,000 visitors came to SÜWEGA.

Green areas and buildings

The Landau city garden inspector Walter Rieger was co-initiator and creator of the overall green planning concept for the 16 hectare SÜWEGA site . In addition to upgrading the existing Schiller Park and the Goethe Park to the south with paths, stairs, fountains, pergolas and seating areas, it envisaged various themed gardens, such as a rock garden, and generous plantings of flowers. Renowned private companies laid out special gardens, for example the Kayser & Seibert nursery from Roßdorf im Odenwald , which is known for its perennial cultivation, has a garden in front of a garden house designed by its garden architect Hans Kayser.

The SÜWEGA hall built at that time , a wooden construction, has been preserved to this day and is still used for a wide variety of events. Also for the SÜWEGA, a wooden building was erected in the north-west of the Landau Zoo , which was used after the end of the exhibition (e.g. for exhibitions and for wintering); from 1993 to 2005 the "zoo school" was housed in it. A large park restaurant for the catering of the visitors and a tasting room of the "Kalmit-Vereinigung" Oberhaardter Quality Wine Producers eV were not missing.

Product show

Innovative products from all areas of horticulture and related industries were also exhibited on the specially designed exhibition grounds (today the "Alter Messplatz"). SÜWEGA was the first trade fair in Germany at which the two-axle narrow- track tractors ( Hela brand , “Varimot” model) developed by Adam Rodach from Edesheim were presented, mainly developed for viticulture and fruit growing . While these began their triumphant advance in the following years, the narrow-gauge caterpillars also shown could not prevail.

Supporting program

In the course of the supporting program for SÜWEGA, the "Südwestdeutsche Kampfspiele" (Südwestdeutsche Kampfspiele) were launched in the stadium, the Südwestfunk -Studio Kaiserslautern determined (on the basis of tape recordings) the "ten best male choirs in the Palatinate" etc. A large exhibition "Art in the Southwest" was organized, for which a catalog was published. Part of this art exhibition was the “Planschau der Gartenarchitekten” from July 24th to August 24th, for which a catalog was also published. A “South Palatinate Handicraft Show” also took place as part of the horticultural exhibition.
