Way of life

The fishing turaco is a resident bird in its entire range . The fragile nest is built as a platform from loose branches 3 to 10 m above the ground in dense foliage. The clutch consists of 2 eggs and the incubation period is 22 to 23 days.

Etymology and history of research

Anton Reichenow described the fishing turaco under the name Corythaix Fischeri . The type specimen came from Witu and was discovered by Gustav Adolf Fischer (1848–1886). As early as 1779 Jan Krzysztof Kluk (1739–1796) introduced the new genus Tauraco for the Guineaturako ( Tauraco persa ( Linnaeus , 1758)), which was later assigned to the fishing turaco . This name is likely based on a name used by the West African natives. The species name honors the discoverer of the type specimen. Zanzibaricus refers to 'Zanzibar'. Richard Hercules Wingfield Pakenham (1906-1993) gave the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park on Zanzibar as a distribution area.
