Jens-Ove Heckel (born 1966 ) is a German veterinarian, conservationist and director of the Landau Zoo in the Palatinate .

Life

He studied veterinary medicine. In 1998 he published his dissertation on the spread and epidemiology of the hepatitis B virus in primate populations, which was by C.-P. Czerny, was supervised by the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Infection and Disease Medicine of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Munich . Since 2000 he has been the director of the Landau Zoo. In 2013 he received a teaching position in the course of nature conservation biology at the University of Koblenz-Landau . In his lectures he would like to introduce animal species that are largely unknown and rare. Heckel has been the first chairman of the Zoological Society for Species and Populations Protection eV since 2012. The ZGAP's main focus is the protection of species of little-known and media-marketed species. In February 2014, he defended the killing and subsequent public cutting and feeding of a surplus giraffe in Copenhagen Zoo , which caused a worldwide sensation. “The breeding programs inevitably create excess. It was not an arbitrary decision, it was well thought out by the Copenhagen Zoo. ” And he points out that animals bred in every zoo are fed: “ When guided tours take us past the petting zoo, it is said, 'We care for the goats with great love as long as they live, but the day will come when 95 percent of them will be slaughtered. And you will find them with our cheetahs. It's just extremely interesting how a mother cheetah eats it with her cubs. '" Heckel is a member of the IUCN's Antelope Specialist Group .

He is the stud book keeper of Prince Alfred-Hirsch .
