Elise Aylen Scott
Elise Aylen Scott , born Desiree Elise Aylen (born November 14, 1904 in Ottawa , † December 18, 1972 in Coonoor , India), was a Canadian writer.
Life
Desiree Elise Aylen was born as the daughter of lawyer Henry Aylen (1857-1940) and his wife Desiree Elise ("Daisy") Bourinot (1866-1955) in Ottawa, where she grew up. Her maternal grandfather, John George Bourinot, was a literary critic and her uncle Arthur S. Bourinot was a poet. She was friends with poets like Audrey Alexandra Brown and published poetry herself in publications like Canadian Bookmen , Canadian Forum , Canadian Poetry Magazine and Dalhousie Review . She was a member of the Canadian Authors Association and the Ottawa Poetry Club.
In 1930 she published Roses of Shadow , a volume of modern, melancholy poems to which the poet Duncan Campbell Scott penned a foreword. He was a friend of her uncle Arthur S. Bourinot. In March 1931 Desiree Elise Aylen became - to the surprise of Ottawa society - the second wife of the much older, widowed Scott. She supported him in the creation of his last work The Circle of Affection . She also enjoyed traveling (including to Vancouver in 1940 ) and made acquaintances in literary circles. After Duncan Campbell Scott's death, she immigrated to India in 1948, where she spent the rest of her life. There she wrote several novels, of which the spiritual work The Night of the Lord appeared in print in Bombay in 1967 . From 1952 to 1962 she lived in Almora , then until her death in the town of Coonoor in the Nilgiris district . In 1972 she died of cancer.
