Coonoor ( Tamil : குன்னூர் Kuṉṉūr [ ˈkunːuːr ]) is a city with about 45,000 inhabitants (2011 census) and the capital of a subdistrict ( taluk ) with about 160,000 inhabitants in the Nilgiri Mountains in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . During the British colonial era , it served higher military and civilian officials as a Hill Station .

location

Coonoor is located in the Nilgiri mountains at an altitude of about 1850  m about 20 km south-east of the city Udagamandalam and is best with by the UNESCO as a world heritage recognized Schmalspurbahn the Nilgiri Mountain Railway reach.

population

The population of Coonoor is ethnically and linguistically mixed: 65 percent of the population speak Tamil as their mother tongue, 10 percent Malayalam , 8 percent Telugu , 8 percent Kannada or Badaga , 6 percent Urdu and 3 percent other languages. There is also great diversity in religious terms: 62 percent of Coonoor's residents are Hindus , 24 percent Christians and 13 percent Muslim .

economy

While fields are still being used in rural areas (including tea cultivation ) and, to a lesser extent, cattle breeding (especially chickens), handicrafts, service industries and trade dominate in the city. Most of the population lives from tourism, which has been enjoying increasing popularity with the Indians since the 1980s.

history

Like the neighboring town of Ooty , Coonoor was also expanded and used as a hill station by the British in the 19th and first half of the 20th century .

Attractions

  • The two-tower Saint Anthony's Church is an impressive building from 1886, which replaced a small previous church.
  • In addition, the Anglican Saint Georges Church and the Saint Sebastian Church give the place an unfamiliar atmosphere for India.
  • Also worth seeing are the inner-city Sim's Park and the surrounding landscape with its tea plantations, forests and viewpoints.
