Alfred F. Havighurst

Alfred Freeman Havighurst (born September 30, 1904 in Mount Pleasant , Iowa , United States , † February 15, 1991 in Leeds , Massachusetts ) was an American historian and university professor .

Alfred F. Havighurst was the son of Freeman Alfred Havighurst (1869–1961) and Winifred Aurelia Havighurst nee. Weter (1874-1966). He obtained a degree in 1925 Bachelor (BA) at the Ohio Wesleyan University and received in 1928 a Master Accounts (MA) of the University of Chicago . From 1928 to 1929 he taught at Pacific University in Oregon . In 1931 he became a professor of history at Amherst College and received a Ph.D. in 1936. at Harvard University . In 1970 he retired .

He was a member of the American Historical Association , the British Records Association and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society .

Amherst College has awarded the Alfred F. Havighurst Prize in History every year since 1970.

Alfred F. Havighurst had three brothers and a sister. Robert James Havighurst (1900–1991) was an educationalist and sociologist; Walter Edwin Havighurst (1901–1994) was a writer and historian.

Fonts

Alfred F. Havighurst has authored several books as well as specialist articles and reviews. In 1958 he re- edited the work on the Pirenne thesis , written by Henri Pirenne from 1923 , and supplemented it with critical analyzes. His work The twentieth century , first published in 1962, has been published several times.

In 1988 the Alfred Havighurst Papers 1928–1988 archive collection was published in his honor by Pacific University .
