Hans Hinrich Zielche (baptized February 22, 1741 in Plön ; † June 13, 1802 in Copenhagen ) was a German flautist and composer.

Live and act

Hans Hinrich Zielche was the son of a father of the same name (* 1695/96; † November 17, 1783 in Plön) and his wife Anna Elisabeth, née Sahr, who died in 1787. His father was an innkeeper in Plön from 1744 and a lackey and flautist at the Plöner Hof and probably gave his son his first flute lessons. In 1757, Duke Friedrich Carl , who had a court orchestra, financed him six months of composition lessons with Georg Philipp Telemann in Hamburg . At the same time he also studied with Friedrich Hartmann Graf , with whom he later arranged and performed.

In 1770, Zielche followed a call from Christian VII , who wanted to expand and improve his court orchestra in Copenhagen . There he played with former members of the band from Plön, including concertmaster Johann Ernst Hartmann . Zielche was the only musician besides Hartmann to receive a salary, which is an indication of his musical ability. In 1770 he became the band's first flutist, and the following year he was appointed court and palace organist. He was also an important musician who played at privately organized events. In 1785 Johann Gottlieb Naumann accepted a call to Copenhagen, whereupon Zielche was one of four soloists to receive an allowance. After that he only had to appear in singing games and operas, but no longer in comedies and ballets.

In the 1790s, Zielche's musical qualities deteriorated. However, he insisted on continuing to perform as a soloist. In 1795, AW Hauch made the unsuccessful attempt to transfer him to Copenhagen as town musician. In the following year, Zielche failed as a soloist during a rehearsal of the Singspiel “Hemmeligheden” by Friedrich Ludwig Aemilius Kunze , whereupon Hauch offered him continued employment without a solo allowance or a retirement for two thirds of the total salary. With financial problems and gout, Zielche opted for retirement, which marked a more dignified end to his career.

In addition to his activities as a musician, Zielche wrote several compositions. He set to music the musical play “Belsor i Hytten” by Ove Malling , which was premiered in 1776 on the occasion of Christian II's birthday , but was only played two more times afterwards. He also wrote the music for the poem "Musikkens Pris" by Knud Lyne Rahbek .

Zielche wrote mostly chamber music, especially for flute. Around two thirds of his works were sonatas for flute and basso continuo and flute quartets. These were also sold in Germany. Stylistically, he worked with pleasant melodies and simple harmonies in the sense of the pre-classical period and the Mannheim school . After 1800 the compositions were apparently no longer played within a short time. Chamberlain Werner Giedde (1756–1816), who collected works for flutes in particular, included Zielche's compositions in his collection in a form that should largely correspond to the original.
