Walter Damm (* 27. June 1904 in Wandsbek ; † 11. February 1981 in Pinneberg ) was a German politician of the SPD and managing director in the housing industry .

Life and work

After elementary school , Damm completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic . On June 21, 1919, he joined the predecessor organization of IG Bau-Steine-Erden and was already a full-time trade union official at the age of seventeen (until 1933). From 1926 to 1927 he studied at the union's own academy of work in Frankfurt am Main . With the " seizure of power " Hitler , he first had to stop his political activities, but was also dismissed by his employer and was banned from working. In 1944 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht, deployed in Norway and in 1945 was taken prisoner of war by the English, from which he was released in September of the same year. In 1945 he moved to Appen in Schleswig-Holstein and became a full-time party secretary of the SPD in the districts of Norder- and Süder-Dithmarschen, Steinburg and Pinneberg. From 1950 until his retirement on June 27, 1969, Walter Damm was a member of the management of the non-profit housing association GmbH Neue Heimat Nord in Hamburg . He was also the publisher of the SPD newspaper for expellees and refugees, The Refugee Advisor, until 1954 .

Political party

Damm belonged to the SPD before 1933 and participated in the rebuilding of the party in 1945. From 1955 to 1965 he was state chairman of the SPD Schleswig-Holstein .

From 1928 to 1932 Damm was a community representative in Bramfeld .

From 1947 to September 3, 1968, Damm was a member of the state parliament in Schleswig-Holstein. He initially represented the constituency of Pinneberg-Uetersen , and from 1954 the constituency of Pinneberg-Elbmarschen in parliament. From 1954 to 1967 he was a member of the parliamentary group's executive committee. From 1958 to 1967 Damm was chairman of the state parliament's committee for work and development.

Public offices

In 1946/47 Damm was district administrator in the Pinneberg district . From June 19 to November 7, 1947 he was parliamentary representative of the Minister for Economics and Transport in Schleswig-Holstein. On November 7, 1947, Prime Minister Hermann Lüdemann appointed him Minister for Resettlement and Development. On January 24, 1949, the name was changed to Minister for Social Affairs . From 1949 to 1951 he was on the board of the Working Group for Productive Refugee Aid eV and, as Minister of Social Affairs, implemented the ERP program 10,000 refugee apartments . After the Social Democratic government was replaced by the Bartram cabinet on September 5, 1950, Walter Damm joined the management of Neue Heimat on October 1, 1950.

Honors

On July 14, 1964, Damm was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with the Star of the Federal Cross of Merit .

The SPD district association Pinneberg named the annual award for voluntary work for social balance, integration and social tolerance after Walter Damm. Walter Damm's son Uwe Damm was mayor of the municipality of Appen from 1990-1998.

The party headquarters of the SPD Schleswig-Holstein is called Walter-Damm-Haus.
