Gerd Walter

Gerd Walter (born April 26, 1949 in Lübeck ) is a German politician ( SPD ).

From 1992 to 2000 he was Minister for Federal and European Affairs and from 1996 to 2000 he was also Minister of Justice for the State of Schleswig-Holstein.

Life and work

After High School Walter holds a degree in political science in Berlin and Hamburg , which he as a graduate finished -Politologe. This was followed by training as an editor in Lübeck at Lübecker Morgen and in Kiel . From 1975 to 1979 he worked as a lecturer in political adult education at the Gustav Heinemann Bildungsstätte in Malente .

Walter has been one of the managing directors of the SPD's own German printing and publishing company since October 2000 .

Gerd Walter is married.

Political party

He has been a member of the SPD since 1968. From 1975 to 1985 he was deputy state chairman and from 1987 to 1991 state chairman of the SPD in Schleswig-Holstein . From 1991 to 1993 he was also a member of the SPD federal executive committee.

Walter was a member of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1992 .

Public offices

After the state elections in 1992, he was appointed Minister for Federal and European Affairs on May 5, 1992 in the state government of Schleswig-Holstein led by Prime Minister Björn Engholm . He kept this office under his successor Heide Simonis . After the state election in 1996, he also took over the management of the Ministry of Justice on May 22, 1996. After the coalition partner Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen claimed responsibility for the justice department after the state elections in 2000, Walter left the government on March 28, 2000. Since 2015 he has been a member of the board of trustees of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation as deputy to Wolfgang Thierse .
