Paul Braess

Paul Braess (born July 12, 1904 in Düsseldorf , † March 19, 1972 in Cologne ) was professor of insurance science at the University of Cologne .

Life

Paul Braess studied at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and the University of Kiel economics . Braess obtained his doctorate in Kiel in 1931 with the tax system and price level . He then worked for the Schleswig Holstein State Fire Fund in Kiel and the Mecklenburg State Fire Fund in Rostock . At the same time he took on teaching positions in Kiel and later in Rostock . His first son, Hans-Hermann Braess, was born in Kiel in October 1936 . Braess became a member of the NSDAP in 1937 (# 4020842). In 1938 he wrote an essay on supply and demand in insurance, and in the same year his essay on “fair premiums” appeared. He spent 1946–1948 as senior government councilor in the Ministry of Finance in Schleswig-Holstein, from 1948–1951 he was city treasurer in Remscheid, and from 1951–1957 city director in Remscheid. In this function, he published tables with effective interest rates for loans and securities with installment repayment in 1956 and tables with effective interest calculations for amortization loans (in finance called "Braess tables"). Braess was appointed to the University of Cologne in 1957 after the death of Walter Rohrbeck (1885–1956) , where he also took over the Institute for Insurance Science. He stayed here until his retirement in 1972. He died only a few months after his retirement in Cologne. His former student Dieter Farny came back to Cologne as his successor in 1972 .
