Dieter Farny

Dieter Farny (born February 21, 1934 in Karlsruhe ; † December 13, 2013 in Cologne ) was a German economist . The focus of his work was in the insurance industry.

Professional background

Farny first attended secondary school in his hometown of Karlsruhe and then completed a commercial apprenticeship. In 1954 he went to study business administration at the University of Cologne , where he received his doctorate and qualified as a professor in 1963. His teacher was Paul Braess . At first he stayed as a private lecturer at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences , before he accepted an appointment from the University of Mannheim in 1965 . There he occupied the newly established chair for general business administration, risk theory, portfolio management and insurance . In 1972, after his teacher's retirement, he was appointed as his successor to his chair at the University of Cologne. He stayed here until his retirement as Director of the Insurance Industry Department and Managing Director of the Institute for Insurance Science.

Farny made a contribution to the development of insurance science in Germany through numerous writings. His book “Versicherungsbetriebslehre”, published in the first edition in 1989, quickly became a standard work and has been reprinted several times, most recently in 2011 in the fifth edition.
