Manuel Rosenthal

Manuel Rosenthal (born June 18, 1904 in Paris ; † June 5, 2003 ibid) was a French composer and conductor .

Life

Since 1918 Rosenthal studied violin with Jules Boucherit at the Conservatoire de Paris and counterpoint with Jean Huré . In 1925 he met Maurice Ravel , whose last pupil he became and with whom he soon became a close friend. In 1934 he became the assistant to the conductor Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht . In the 1930s he orchestrated Ravel's Histoires naturelles and three of the Cinq mélodies populaires grecques . In 1934 he became conductor of the Orchester National de la Radiodiffusion Française .

During the Second World War he was taken prisoner of war in 1940; after his liberation in 1944 he became chief conductor of the Orchester National. From 1948 to 1951 he directed the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and from 1964 to 1967 the Orchester Symphonique de Liege . On international concert tours he performed the works of contemporary composers such as Stravinsky , Schönberg , Hindemith , Bartók , Messiaen , Satie , Debussy and his teacher Ravel.

From 1962 to 1974 Rosenthal worked as a professor of orchestral conducting at the Conservatoire de Paris. He composed operas , ballets and other orchestral works, chamber music , choral works and songs . In 1995 he published his memories of Ravel: Ravel: souvenirs de Manuel Rosenthal .
