Archbishop Michael Ramsey (1961)

Arthur Michael Ramsey, Baron Ramsey of Canterbury (born November 14, 1904 in Cambridge , † April 23, 1988 in Oxford ) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1961 to 1974 .

Life

Ramsey studied at Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge . In 1950 he was appointed Regius Professor of Divinity , but in 1952 he became Bishop of Durham and later Archbishop of York . At the coronation of the young Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953 in Westminster Abbey , he was one of the prelates accompanying her . He was a recognized theologian and was involved in the ecumenical movement. With the election to the 100th Archbishop of Canterbury, he replaced Geoffrey Fisher , who had already been his teacher in Cambridge, in this office . Fisher wanted to prevent Ramsey's election by pointing out to Prime Minister Harold Macmillan that he was Ramsey's teacher. The Prime Minister replied that while Fisher was Ramsey's teacher, it was not his. Ramsey was considered an extremely liberal archbishop who not only campaigned against strong resistance for the social integration of immigrants from the Commonwealth, but also for the liberalization of, among other things, the sexual criminal law and for the rights of homosexuals.

Membership in the House of Lords as a spiritual lord is associated with the office of Archbishop of York or Canterbury . After Ramsey's retreat into private life, he was appointed as Baron Ramsey of Canterbury , of Canterbury in Kent, to be the Life Peer of the Peerage of the United Kingdom on November 18, 1974 , thus keeping his House of Lords seat. In 1974 he was also awarded the Royal Victorian Chain . In 1983 he became an honorary member of the British Academy .

Lord Ramsey died in 1988. His ashes were in the garden of Canterbury - cloister buried.
