Friedrich Jakob Dochnahl

Friedrich Jakob Dochnahl (born March 4, 1820 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse (formerly Neustadt an der Haardt ), † July 18, 1904 there ) was a German naturalist , pomologist and local historian .

Life

Friedrich Jakob Dochnahl learned gardening and devoted himself particularly to botanical and pomological studies. From 1849 he lived in Cadolzburg in Middle Franconia. He headed the Haffner nursery there for several years. After the falling out with Haffner, he founded his own tree nursery in the neighboring Wachendorf . In 1861 he moved back to his hometown. He tried to improve the German fruit and wine growing , in particular through numerous publications and reviews at fruit exhibitions.

Dochnahl set up his own pomological system and also tried to promote willow culture, to rationalize wine improvement in the sense of Ludwig Gall , Jean-Antoine Chaptals and Pétiots, and to artificial winemaking without grapes and without fermentation . In May 2016, the botanist Norbert Holstein and his colleague Werner Greuter suggested that Dochnahl's collected writings should be suppressed in future scientific work.

He received an award from the German Academy of Natural Scientists .

In addition to his natural history activities, Friedrich Jakob Dochnahl was also an enthusiastic local historian. He published his research results in book form in 1867 under the title Chronik von Neustadt an der Haardt, along with the surrounding towns and castles, with special consideration of the wine years . In the foreword he writes that for 25 years he collected everything that he could find in various, mostly unprinted sources, historical material about his hometown.
