Tadeusz Zygfryd Kassern (born March 19, 1904 in Lemberg , † May 2, 1957 in New York City ) was a Polish composer.

Kassern was a piano student of Jerzy Lalewicz at the Conservatory of the Polish Music Society in Lemberg and studied composition with Mieczysław Sołtys . From 1922 to 1926 he continued his studies at the Poznan Conservatory with Henryk Opieński (composition) and Wieńczysław Brzostowski (piano). He also studied law at the University of Poznan .

He lived in Paris until 1931, after which he worked for the Polish Public Prosecutor until 1939. During this time, in addition to his work as a composer, he wrote music reviews of the Nowy Kurier (1929–33) and the Dziennik Poznański (1934–38). In 1939 he was evacuated to Lviv, and in 1940 he worked in the Krakow bookstore Gebethner and Wolff . Because of his Jewish origins, he went into hiding in Warsaw as Teodor Sroczyński in 1942 and in Zakopane after the Warsaw Uprising .

In 1945 he became a teller of Polish cultural affairs in New York, and in 1948 he became consul and delegate for cultural affairs at the United Nations . In late 1948, he retired from the diplomatic service and decided to stay in the United States. In 1956 he received a permanent residence visa. Until his death, he taught piano and music theory at the Third Street Music School , the Jaques-Dalcroze Institute, and the New School for Social Research .
