Kazimierz Wierzyński
Kazimierz Wierzyński (born August 27, 1894 in Drohobytsch , Austria-Hungary , † February 13, 1969 in London ) was a Polish writer.
biography
After graduating from high school in 1912, Wierzyński studied philology for a year at the Jagiellonian University and then Slavic, German and philosophy at the University of Vienna . When the First World War broke out , he joined the Wschodni Legion under General Józef Haller . After its dissolution, he was drafted into the Austrian army and in 1915 was taken prisoner by Russia.
After the war he went to Warsaw, where his literary career began. He published ten volumes of poetry by 1938 and founded the poetry magazine and poet group Skamander with Antoni Słonimski , Julian Tuwim , Jan Lechoń and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz . He edited the magazines Kultura (1931–1932) and Przegląd Sportowy (1926–1931) and worked as a literary and theater critic for Gazeta Polska . At the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, he won the gold medal in the poetry category. In 1936 he was awarded the National Prize for Literature, and two years later he became a member of the Polish Academy of Literature .
After the outbreak of war in September 1939 , he was evacuated to Lemberg with Gazeta Polska . From there he fled from the German occupation to France, later via Portugal and Brazil to the USA. During the war years he published a volume of poetry almost annually. After the war he worked in London for Mieczysław Grydzewskis Wiadomości and for Radio Free Europe . On the day of his death in 1969, he was still working on his last volume of poetry, Sen mara .
His ashes were transferred to Poland in 1978.
