Mieczysław Grydzewski

Mieczysław Grydzewski (born December 27, 1894 in Warsaw , † January 9, 1970 in London ) was a Polish journalist, newspaper publisher, columnist and literary critic.

Grydzweski attended the private high school and the commercial college in Warsaw. During the First World War he began to study law at the University of Moscow , from 1916 he studied history at the University of Warsaw . In 1916 he published his first article in the academic journal Pro arte et studio . From 1917 he was part of their editorial team and published numerous articles, polemics and columns.

In 1920 he was one of the founders of Skamander magazine . Although this was headed by the members of the poets group of the same name ( Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz , Jan Lechoń , Antoni Słonimski , Julian Tuwim and Kazimierz Wierzyński ), he soon actually held the position of editor-in-chief and publisher. He received a doctorate in 1922 for a thesis on Polish-French relations during the time of Stanislaus II August Poniatowski under the supervision of Marceli Handelman .

From 1924 he published the literary magazine Wiadomości Literackie with Antoni Borman , for which he also worked as an editor. The magazine had a democratic-liberal, anti-racist and pacifist orientation and provided regular information on foreign cultural life, especially French and English literature ( Marcel Proust , Joseph Conrad ). Antoni Słonimski's Kroniki tygodniowe also appeared here in 1927 .

1925-26 he also edited the magazine To-To with Borman and Julian Tuwim . His monthly La Pologne Litteraire appeared in French from 1926 , and again with Borman he published the monthly Przyjaciel Psa from 1936 . After the outbreak of the Second World War, he fled to France via Romania, Yugoslavia and Italy. In March 1940 he began to publish Polish Political and Literary News in Paris , the official editor of which was Zygmunt Nowakowski . After the occupation of France, he went to Great Britain, where he continued his weekly newspaper until it was closed by the authorities in 1944. From September 1944 he had a regular column in the magazine Polska Walcząca .

In 1946 he resumed the publication of the magazine Wiadomości Literackie in London , which he edited until 1966. In this he published his articles and columns, theater and literary reviews. He has also published articles in Dziennik Polski and Dziennik Żołnierza . 1956-67 he was awarded the Jurzykowski Foundation Prize for his literary work .
