Jerzy Żuławski
Jerzy Żuławski (born July 14, 1874 in Lipowiec , † August 9, 1915 in Dębica ) was a Polish writer , poet and playwright .
Life
Before studying at ETH Zurich , he attended secondary schools in Bochnia and Krakow . In 1898 he obtained a doctorate in philosophy in Bern . Back in Poland, he worked as a high school teacher in Jasło and Kraków, but later devoted himself entirely to his dream job as a literary figure. After the outbreak of World War II, he joined the of Józef Pilsudski launched Polish Legions and died a year later in a military hospital in typhoid fever.
Żuławski's best-known works are the play Eros i Psyche ( German Eros and Psyche. Scenes in seven chapters , 1904) and his so-called “moon trilogy”: In this three-part science fiction series, consisting of the novels Na srebrnym globie. Rękopis z Księżyca ( German on the silver globe. A manuscript from the moon , 1903), Zwycieżca ( German Der Sieger , 1910) and Stara ziemia ( German The old earth , 1911), Żuławski describes the establishment and further history of a human colony on the Back of the moon and the collision with an extraterrestrial civilization that has resided there for thousands of years. Particularly noteworthy is the critical illumination of the myths about the first settlers and other mechanisms of human society and religion that progressed in the course of the three volumes.
Żuławski himself created an opera libretto of the same name based on his piece Eros i Psyche, Eros and Psyche , which was set to music by Ludomir Różycki . The premiere took place on March 10, 1917 in the City Theater of Breslau in German.
The Polish director Andrzej Żuławski , the author's great-nephew, filmed the novel Na srebrnym globie in 1976 under the same title; However, only four-fifths of the project was completed, as the then Polish Minister of Culture had to stop the shooting and burn all the props and parts of the film material.
