Oran Henry Pape (born March 10, 1904 in Waupeton , Iowa , USA , † April 30, 1936 in Davenport , Iowa), nickname : Nanny , was an American football player and police officer . He played in the National Football League (NFL), including the Green Bay Packers .
Player career
Oran Pape visited in Dubuque , the high school , where he also played American football. In 1924 he won the state championship with his team. Oran Pape graduated from the University of Iowa . Pape operating on the college athletics and played in 1928 and 1929 along with Ollie Sansen as halfback American Football with the Iowa Hawkeyes . Because of his athletic achievements, he received awards from his college in both academic years.
In 1930 he was signed by the Minneapolis Red Jackets , an NFL club. During the season, coach George Gibson's team had to cease playing and he moved to the Green Bay Packers, trained by Curly Lambeau . The team from Green Bay had numerous all-pro players such as LaVern Dilweg , John McNally and Cal Hubbard in their ranks. Pape and his team won the NFL championship that year after 10 wins in 14 games. In 1931 Pape ran for the Providence Steam Roller and in 1932 played for the Boston Braves and the Staten Island Stapletons . He then ended his career.
After the playing career
Oran Pape became a member of the Iowa State Police on August 1, 1935. He received his training at Fort Dodge at the State Police Academy . On April 29, 1936, near Muscatine , Muscatine County , on US Highway 61 , he checked a car that had been reported as stolen. Its driver threatened him with a firearm and took him hostage . He made him get into his vehicle. While driving, Oran Pape saw an opportunity to overpower the offender. Two shots were fired during the scuffle. Pape's opponent was immediately killed by a headshot. Oran Pape received a life-threatening stomach injury from a projectile , but was able to call for help. Pape died of his injuries a day later in a Davenport hospital . Because his veins had collapsed, he could not be given a blood transfusion . Oran Pape is buried in Linewood Cemetery , Dubuque. The death of Oran Pape was one of the reasons that police officers in the USA later carried their service weapon on the side of their body opposite the strong hand / firing hand in order to be able to better ward off physical attacks with the strong hand.
Honors
In the city of Des Moines , a public building was named after Oran Pape in 2012.
