Henri Grob vs. Willem Muhring (Hastings, 1947-48)

Henry Grob (born June 4, 1904 in Braunau , Switzerland; † July 5, 1974 in Zurich ) was a Swiss chess master and painter.

Life

Grob, who was a painter and bookseller by profession and later founded his chess publisher Grob , won the Swiss chess championship in 1939 and 1951 . He represented his homeland at the 1927 Chess Olympiads in London , 1935 in Warsaw and 1952 in Helsinki .

Until the beginning of the 1950s he took part in numerous international tournaments . His greatest success was the shared first place (with Paul Keres and Reuben Fine ) in Ostend in 1937.

Gross played a large number of competitions against well-known chess masters: in 1933 he lost to Salo Flohr in Arosa with 1.5: 4.5 (+1 = 1 −4), in 1934 he beat Jacques Mieses 4.5: 1.5 ( +4 = 1 −1), in 1937 (in Zurich) he played a draw (+1 = 2 −1) against the Belgian George Koltanowski . In Zurich he lost to Max Euwe in 1947 with 0.5: 5.5 (+0 = 1 −5), in 1948 Miguel Najdorf with 1: 5 (+1 = 0 −5), in 1949 Efim Bogoljubow with 1.5: 4, 5 (+1 = 1 −4) and in 1950 the Dutchman Lodewijk Prins with 1.5: 4.5 (+1 = 1 −4). In 1962 he won a senior tournament in Zurich together with Boris Kostić .

In 1950 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master .

He became well known in Switzerland through his chess column Fernschachzentrale in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , which he had been in charge since 1941. He played a total of 3,614 long- distance games against his readers.

The opening 1. g2 – g4 ( Grob's attack ) is named after Grob . In one book, the attack g2 – g4 is still called "Genoese" or "Partie Ahlhausen" . Grob also writes there that he has extensively researched this opening through the correspondence chess headquarters of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (FSZ) and has come to the conclusion that the white attack plan ( 1. g4, 2. Bg2, 3. c4 ) is through Black ( 1. d7 – d5 2. e7 – e5 3. c7 – c6 ) can be refuted precisely. Due to the well-known refutation, this opening is not considered to be fully valued and rarely occurs in master practice.

Grob used his skills as a painter to design chess pieces according to his own, modern and simple design.
