Egon Strohm

Egon Strohm (born October 24, 1904 in Trossingen ; † May 2, 1983 in Berlin ) was a German journalist , writer and primarily literary translator .

Life

Egon Strohm came from a brewery family that ran the Zum Bären brewery (later the Bärenbrauerei) in Trossingen. In 1935 he was with the dissertation The British Empire as an economic entity on the trade-Hochschule Mannheim - in the 1933 Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg incorporated - for Dr. oec. PhD .

From the 1930s Egon Strohm lived in Berlin, where he mainly worked as a radio reporter. He married the English opera singer Margery Booth (1905–1952), who celebrated successes at the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin and at the Bayreuth Festival , but also acted as a British spy . Uncovered and imprisoned towards the end of the war, she nevertheless managed to escape from Germany. At this point, however, the marriage with Egon Strohm was already broken, so that the divorce followed shortly after the end of the war .

In 1946 Egon Strohm published Painful Journey , a development novel about a student of economics who discovered writing for himself. The plot, set in the 1920s and 1930s, contains clear biographical references, but at the same time was primarily designed to come to terms with the past . In addition, Strohm created several radio plays for radio . Occasionally he was also seen as an actor, for example directed by Irving Pichel in the role of Cardinal Hieronymus Aleander in the German-US film production Martin Luther (1953).

However, Egon Strohm became known to a wide reading public as a translator. From 1953 to the end of the 1970s he created the German-language versions of numerous bestsellers of their time, above all by Juliette Benzoni , Gavin Lyall , John Masters , James A. Michener and Robert Ruark . Strohm translated works by Frank Yerby particularly often . But the German versions of the bestseller Jaws of Peter Benchley and Watership Down by Richard Adams come from him. Strohm mostly worked for the publishing houses Blanvalet and Scherz , later also for Ullstein .

Egon Strohm died on May 2, 1983 at the age of 78 in Berlin.
