Martin Caidin

Martin Strasser Caidin (* 14. September 1927 in New York ; † 24. March 1997 in Tallahassee , Florida ) was an American non-fiction, and science fiction - author .

Life

Martin Caidin became an orphan at an early age and grew up partly in the children's home and partly on his grandparents' farm in New York State . He was very interested in technology; He published his first article on the design of Messerschmitt fighter aircraft at the age of 16. In 1945 he joined the merchant navy and worked in Japan for a few years . He served in the Air Force from 1947 to 1950 and made it up to sergeant. He then moved to Florida, where he made aviation a hobby and worked on one of the early space programs. He then worked as a consultant for various airlines until 1964.

In addition to non-fiction books on space travel, military history and aviation, he wrote a number of science fiction novels, one of which was made into a film in 1969 under the title Lost in Space . When the novel was published again at the start of the film, the text from 1964 was changed significantly and adapted to the technical progress of the space program. Caidin also wrote the Steve Austin Cycle, which was the model for the film and TV series The Six Million Dollar Man (and the offshoot The Seven Million Dollar Woman ). After these successes, Hollywood producers bought the film rights to almost every new book by the author, but only a few were actually made into films. Probably the most successful film adaptation of one of his books is The Last Countdown from 1980. A time travel story that tells the American aircraft carrier Nimitz, one day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The book was filmed with a large cast of stars including Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen and Katharine Ross. After all, Caidin was financially secure in this way and could devote himself to his favorite hobby, flying.

Caidin restored the oldest still flying Junkers Ju 52 , which he called "Iron Annie". It later went to Lufthansa and is still used for VIP flights today.

He died of thyroid cancer at the age of 69.
