Frank Yerby

Frank Garvin Yerby (born September 5, 1916 in Augusta , Georgia , † November 29, 1991 in Madrid , Spain ) was an American author of historical novels.

Life

Yerby was the first African American to publish a bestseller with his novel The Foxes of Harrow in 1946 . In the same year, he was also the first black man to sell the rights to the film to the Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox . Most recently, the film was honored with an Oscar nomination for the film of the same name, starring Rex Harrison and Maureen O'Hara .

He wrote a total of 33 novels. Yerby thought his "African Americanism" as a writer was unimportant.

Yerby left the United States in 1955 to protest racial discrimination , visited France and lived in Madrid until his death. His second wife was Spanish. Yerby died of heart failure in Madrid in 1991 and was buried there.
