Herdis (Hurdis) William McCrary (born June 9, 1904 in Bicknell , Indiana , USA - † November 5, 1981 in Green Bay , Wisconsin ) was an American football player . Among other things, he played as a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for the Green Bay Packers .

career

Herdis McCrary studied at the University of Georgia from 1926 to 1928 . There he was active as an athlete and American football player. In all three years he was recognized by his college for his athletic achievements.

Curly Lambeau

In 1929 he was hired by the Green Bay Packers, who were trained by Curly Lambeau . As was customary for the time, McCrary played for the Packers in various positions. The ranks of the team from Wisconsin included numerous all-pro players such as LaVern Dilweg , John McNally , Cal Hubbard and Mike Michalske . McCrary won the NFL championship with his team in his rookie year . McCrary played a decisive role in winning the title. At the season's highlight, the Packers and the New York Giants faced each other on November 24, 1929 . Both teams hadn't lost a game before. McCrary caught a pass from Verne Lewellen in the first half and was able to use it for a touchdown . The Packers shouldn't give up the 7-0 lead until the end of the game. They ultimately won the game 20-6 and were unbeaten that season. In the following two years the Packers were able to defend their title. After the 1933 season, McCrary retired.

Herdis McCrary died in 1981. He is buried in Fort Howard Memorial Park in Green Bay .
