The city was created in 1950 from the amalgamation of the cities of Lüshun (= Port Arthur ), Dalian and Jinzhou , whereby the name was formed from the initial syllables of the two largest of these cities.

The metropolis, which had grown together to form a metropolis of over a million, was of great strategic importance due to its location, as it controlled the entrance to the northern Chinese Gulf of Bohai . In 1981 it was decided again to administratively separate the cities from one another. In the meantime, all three of the original cities have been combined to form the prefecture-level city of Dalian .
