Peace treaty of 1904 between Chile and Bolivia

The 1904 peace treaty between Chile and Bolivia was signed on October 20, 1904 and formally ended the saltpeter war . The document defines the border between the two countries by 96 border points.

  • In the treaty, Bolivia recognizes Chilean sovereignty over the former Bolivian coastal region of Antofagasta .
  • Chile recognizes Bolivia's right to trade between the Chilean ports on the Pacific and Bolivian territory.

To this end, the contract includes the construction of the Arica – La Paz railway line .

Previously, Chile and Peru (formerly Bolivia's ally in the war against Chile) had signed a peace treaty in the Treaty of Ancón in 1883 . The Treaty of Valparaíso was signed between Chile and Bolivia in 1884 .
