İsmail Kılıç Kökten

İsmail Kılıç Kökten (* 1904 in Ünye , † July 25, 1974 in Ankara ) was a Turkish archaeologist .

After schooling in Kütahya and Trabzon , Kökten worked as a teacher in Samsun from 1923 to 1936 . He then studied philology, history and geography at the University of Ankara , where he became an assistant at the Institute for Ethnology and Anthropology in 1941. In 1947 he received his doctorate , he received the title of Doçent in 1953. In 1959 he became a professor at the Department of Prehistory at Ankara University.

As an archaeologist, he worked in the field of Anatolian early history. He was active in excavations in the area of ​​Samsun (1941 with Tahsin Özgüç and Nimet Özgüç), at Gaziantep ( Perrhe , 1945/46), in Niksar (1947) and around Antalya (1946-1958), where he carried out the excavations in the Karain -Cave , which he continued from 1967-1973 together with Işın Yalçınkaya . There he was also responsible for setting up the local museum. With the excavations in Karain and in the cave of Kadıini near Alanya , Kökten brought to light the oldest finds on Anatolian territory to date.
