Tahsin Özgüç (born March 20, 1916 in Kardschali , today Bulgaria , † October 28, 2005 in Ankara ) was a Turkish archaeologist from the Near East .

Tahsin Özgüç belonged to the first generation of archaeologists trained in Turkey. His teachers at the newly created Ankara University included German exiles such as the archaeologist Hans Henning von der Osten and the ancient orientalists Hans Gustav Güterbock and Benno Landsberger . In 1942 he became a doctor, in 1945 an assistant, in 1946 a lecturer and finally a professor in 1954. Visiting professorships took him to Princeton from 1962 to 1964, to Saarland University in 1964 and to Munich University in 1975/76 .

In 1948 Özgüç began his most important work, which was to occupy him for more than five decades, the excavation in Kültepe , the location of the ancient Assyrian trading post of Kaneš. He carried out further excavations in Altıntepe in northeastern Turkey and in Maşat Höyük, among others .

In addition to his scientific work, Özgüç was active in academic self-government, in 1968/69 he was dean of his department and from 1969 to 1980, in addition to his work as an archaeologist, rector of Ankara University. In addition, the Nestor of Near Eastern Archeology in Turkey, as a member of the government commission for the reform of the educational system, played a key role in the expansion of the university landscape in Turkey.

In May 2001, he was from the Free University of Berlin , the honorary doctorate awarded. A large Hittite exhibition at the end of 2001 in Cologne and Bonn was initiated by Özgüç. He was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , the Archaeological Institute of America , the German Archaeological Institute , the British Academy and other Turkish and international associations.
