Karl Freiherr von Leoprechting (born December 17, 1818 in Mannheim ; † January 20, 1864 there ), folklorist and genealogist, lived in Mannheim, where his father worked as a Bavarian major, in Munich , in Pöring near Landsberg am Lech and Neuötting .

origin

He came from the old Bavarian noble family von Leoprechting . His father was August von Leoprechting (* July 22, 1789; † September 21, 1863), landlord of Altwiesloch and Bayertal in Baden, royal Bavarian. Major, his mother Anna, Baroness Petit des Landes et de Maubuisson (born April 26, 1796, † March 28, 1833), came from the old French family of the Barons von Maubuisson, who owned Eulenburg Castle near Worms.

Life

Karl von Leoprechting attended the Lyceum in Mannheim, the Kaiser Institute in Heidelberg and the agricultural school in Wiesbaden. From 1839 to 1842 he made a major Cavalier tour through Italy, Sicily, Spain, France, Holland and Belgium. Later trips through Austria and Hungary followed. An attempt to join the Bavarian military had to be given up because of a heart condition. In 1844, when he was living as a royal chamberlain in Munich, he bought Pöring Castle in Pitzling , today a district of Landsberg am Lech, where he collected the capital stock for his handwritten studies with enormous energy. He had the castle rebuilt and renovated and bought two side altars for the castle church. He had the agriculture belonging to the castle run by a tenant. In 1855 he bought a mansion near Neuötting, and in 1857 he sold Pöring Castle.

Leoprechting's interest in historical and folklore topics was aroused by Lamezan's privy councilor, an acquaintance of his maternal grandfather. He wrote his best work, Aus dem Lechrain , for the pleasure and joy of old stories that he heard in taverns . About German customs and legends . The book was published in Munich in 1855. It served many legends collections as a source and is often in the Concise Dictionary of German superstition of Hanns-Bächtold Stäubli quoted. It is considered a model work for German research on customs and legends. It reflects the entire religious household needs and superstition, which, as Leoprechting believed, based on the Brothers Grimm , was inherited from the gray heathen times . He thus introduced customs, festivals and ways of life into cultural history .

In 1754 Leoprechting became a knight of the Order of St. George . In 1863 he became a district councilor and Landwehr major in Neuötting. Karl von Leoprechting died on January 20, 1864 on a trip to Mannheim.

family

In 1848 he married the Hungarian Countess Franziska Erdödij von Monyorókerék and Monoszló. In 1849 their only child, Ernst-Wolfgang Freiherr von Leoprechting , was born. In 1854 [?] He sold his castle and finally moved to Neuötting .
